This is a full-time, full- year position at St-Laurent Academy, one of Ottawa's most prestigious and dynamic private schools. Position Overview

St-Laurent Academy is seeking an energetic, student-centered, and highly engaging High School Physical Education Teacher who is passionate about helping adolescents develop healthy lifestyles, confidence, leadership skills, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.

The successful candidate will bring a positive and encouraging approach to working with teenagers, creating an environment where students feel motivated, challenged, supported, and included. Beyond the classroom, this individual will play a key role in fostering a vibrant school culture through athletics, coaching, leadership opportunities, student events, and extracurricular programming.

This position is ideal for an educator who understands that physical education extends beyond sports and fitness—it is about building character, resilience, teamwork, wellness, and meaningful relationships with students.

Key Responsibilities

Physical Education Instruction

  •  Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate Physical Education and Health curriculum in accordance with Ontario curriculum expectations. 
  •  Create a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment that encourages participation from students of all skill levels and athletic abilities. 
  •  Promote physical literacy, fitness, wellness, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. 
  •  Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles and student needs. 
  •  Assess, evaluate, and report on student progress in accordance with school policies and Ministry expectations. 
  •  Maintain appropriate safety standards and risk-management practices during all physical activities. 
Student Engagement & Relationship Building

  •  Build strong, respectful, and positive relationships with high school students. 
  •  Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging personal growth, responsibility, and self-confidence. 
  •  Foster student voice, leadership, and participation in school life. 
  •  Support students in developing healthy habits related to physical, mental, and emotional well-being. 
  •  Contribute to a school culture where students feel connected, valued, and supported. 
Coaching & Athletics

  •  Coach one or more school athletic teams throughout the academic year. 
  •  Organize practices and work alongside the Athletics Director to help organize competitions, tournaments, and athletic events. 
  •  Promote participation and school spirit through athletics and recreational programming. 
  •  Develop athletes while emphasizing teamwork, character, commitment, and personal growth. 
  •  Support the continued growth and development of the school's athletic programs. 

Professional Responsibilities

  •  Collaborate effectively with colleagues, administration, and families. 
  •  Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events. 
  •  Communicate regularly and professionally with students and parents. 
  •  Support the mission, vision, and values of the school. 
  •  Maintain professional records, attendance, and assessment documentation. 

Qualifications

Required

  •  1 - 2 years experience in a Physical Education, Coaching, Outdoor Education, Sport Camp Counselling, and/ or Wellness Programming
  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and membership in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers would be a significant asset, but is not a requirement for this role.
  •  Experience working with and teaching/guiding adolescents at the intermediate and/or senior level. 
  •  Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills. 
  •  Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain). 
  •  Demonstrated commitment to student well-being and positive school culture. 
Preferred

  •  Previous coaching experience in school, club, or community athletics. 
  •  Experience organizing athletic events, tournaments, or extracurricular programming. 
  •  Background in leadership development, student life, outdoor education, or wellness programming.
